Program Description

Letterbox Challenge

You may have heard of geocaching, but have you ever heard of letterboxing? Letterboxing is a treasure hunt in which participants locate boxes which have been hidden throughout the community.

Through August 31, use clues found at atlasquest.com to start searching for any/all of the more than 30 letterboxes library staff have hidden throughout and nearby the Bloomington-Normal community.

Each box will contain a stamp press; participants will need to bring their own marker(s) from home. Once a box is located, color the stamp with the markers and press the stamp's image onto a piece of paper or into a notebook which also needs to be brought from home. The finders(s) walk away with the stamped image while leaving the box and stamp where they were found so they can be enjoyed by others on the quest.

To view clues:

  • visit atlasquest.com;
  • search for Bloomington, IL;
  • click on any result titled “BPL Letterbox Challenge”
  • click on “view clue”.

Tips:

When you're on the atlasquest website, hovering over the icons located next to each letterbox’s title will tell you more about the letterbox and its location.

If you want to digitally record your finds or leave comments, you’ll need to register for a free account on the Atlas Quest website (this is optional). And if you want to share tales of your adventures (without giving away your location) tag us on social media!

Of note:

  • Questions can be directed to the library’s Adult Services Desk at 309.590.8941.
  • When hunting for letterboxes, please be respectful, discreet, and leave things the way you found them.
