Program Description

Ruth E. Carter: Interweaving Tradition and Imagination Through Costume Design

Join us for a special event with Ruth E. Carter, two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer for the films Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). With her win in 2018, Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

Carter’s ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character makes her one of the most sought-after designers today. She is known for her research and diligence, specifically for her work on films such as Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, and Ava DuVernay’s Selma. Among numerous other awards and recognitions, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Aisha Harris, co-host of NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour and author of Wannabe, will lead the discussion.
